The Russian defense industry is in need of modernization - this is what top officials continue to say, but for most people, the main weapon of the Russian army is still the good old Kalashnikov. However, Russian experts are doing everything possible to let the Russian army remain one of the strongest armies in the world.

Igor Korotchenko, chief editor of National Defense Magazine

"If we look today at our leading defense holdings, then the first one that stands out is Almaz-Antey concern. This is a leading Russian holding. Then there's united aircraft-building corporation and ship-building corporation, as well as the Tactical Missiles Corporation and holding company Russian Helicopters. All these companies work successfully. For example, Almaz -Antey currently works on the construction of two new factories from scratch, so for first time since the collapse of the USSR the country began to create new defense enterprises. One of the factories will produce air defense systems, including S-400 and S-500. The second factory will produce the entire range of guided missiles for these anti-missile systems. This is a good example of how the technological potential of the defense complex changes, because these are new companies of a new type. They are being built, as I said, on the basis of new technological principles, and this is a real example of how changes happen in the country."
