A FREIGHT train has derailed in outback Queensland, spilling dangerous acid on the ground and causing an emergent situation to be declared.

Police say the 26 carriage freight train that derailed at 10:20 this morning about 20km east of Julia Creek was carrying about 200,000 litres of sulfuric acid.

The emergent situation has been declared to assist in the clean up of a “minor leakage” of the acid, along with some diesel fuel.

The Flinders Highway is closed in both directions between Julia Creek and Richmond.

Three people on the train sustained only minor injuries from the derailment.

Police say the exclusion zone will be in place until at least late this afternoon.
