What is Chlamydia?

Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) that is caused by a bacteria called Chlamydia Trachomatis. It affects the womb and cervix in women and the urethra (tube inside the penis) in men and can lead to infertility if untreated. It is the most common type of STI in New Zealand.

How do you catch Chlamydia?

Chlamydia is passed on via semen or vaginal fluids of a person who is infected. Most people catch the infection, by having vaginal, oral or anal sex with someone who has Chlamydia. You cannot catch this STI from hugging, kissing or sharing drinks. Pregnant women can spread the infection to their baby during childbirth.

Symptoms of Chlamydia in Women
70% of women have no symptoms. If there are symptoms women may get:
* vaginal discharge
* bleeding between periods
* bleeding after sex
* lower abdominal pain
* pain when passing urine
* pain during sex

Symptoms of Chlamydia in Men
50% of men have no symptoms. If there are symptoms men may experience:
* pain when passing urine
* discharge from the penis
*pain or discomfort at the end of the penis

What tablets treat Chlamydia?
Doctors prescribe antibiotics like Azithromycin or Doxycycline for cure. Not only is it important to avoid sex for at least seven days after you and your partner/s have had treatment. But, if you do have sex, you must use a condom or oral dam as you are still infectious.

You MUST see a doctor for an examination and intravenous treatment if:

* You have symptoms of pain in your lower abdomen (females) or in the testicles (males).

Should you get treated?
Yes! If left untreated Chlamydia can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease in women, and it can render both women and men infertile. Once you have had antibiotics it is best to get tested again in 3 months to make sure you are free from infection.
