Women Not Taking The Combined Pill:
If you are not taking the pill, you can try a hormone tablet called Norethisterone (Primolut). You start 3 days before a period is due and take one tablet three times a day for upto 2 weeks. Your period will begin normally 2-3 days after stopping it.
Norethisterone is normally safe to take, however if you have an increased risk of blood clots, this method may not be suitable for you. Side effects may occur which include breast discomfort, bloating, stomach upset and reduced libido.

How does this work?
Norethisterone contains a progestogen hormone, which helps sustain the lining of the uterus. When progestogen levels drop in the body, the lining of the womb is shed (as a menstrual period). By taking Norethisterone it stops the normal period. However, when Primolut is taken this way, it does not protect you from pregnancy.

How do I take Norethisterone (Primolut)?
Start taking Primolut at least 2 to 3 days before you need it. Specifically, take one tablet three times a day for the entire time you want to avoid your period for a maximum of 14 days. If you forget a pill, just take the tablet as soon as you remember. More importantly, avoid taking two tablets at once as this can make you feel unwell.

Women Taking The Combined Pill:
If you are taking a combined pill that has 21 hormone pills and 7 inactive pills eg Levlen, then simply start the next pack without the usual seven-day break. Taking packs back-to-back in this way is safe and many women prefer to take their hormone pills continuously to avoid periods.
If you are not already taking "the pill" then you might consider starting it if it is likely to be a suitable contraceptive in the future. You will have to start it a few weeks before you leave to ensure you do not have your period while you are on holiday.

How does this work?
Women taking "the pill" do not have normal periods. Rather, they are withdrawal bleeds which occur when the hormone pills are not taken. The hormones in the pill help to sustain the lining of the womb (uterus). It is not dangerous to take the pill continuously, although some women notice that they might develop spotting which gets less over time. It will not affect your fertility in the future.

How do I take the pill continuously?
Simply remove the sugar pills from your pill packet and only take hormone tablets. Initially, you may have some breakthrough bleeding but this improves with time.

Other medications used to lighten a period include:
Ibuprofen & Tranexamic Acid.
