Thousands of people gathered in the main square of the Syrian coastal city of Tartus, on Thursday, to celebrate the victory of Bashar al-Assad in the presidential elections.

Assad supporters could be seen dancing and waving Syrian flags. Drone footage also captured the celebrations continuing into the night.

On Thursday, the Syrian parliament announced that the re-elected president had won 95.1 percent of the votes, giving him seven more years in power.

The three candidates to run were current Assad, former cabinet member Abdullah Salloum Abdullah, and opposition party member Mahmoud Ahmad Marai. Forty-eight other candidates had their applications refused by the Syrian Supreme Constitutional Court.
