Before becoming President, Biden pledged to create a pathway for over 11 million undocumented people to gain U.S. citizenship. Such words are reportedly being used by smugglers to entice people to cross the border illegally into the U.S. Cochise County Sheriff, Mark Dannels gives his ground-level take on the South West border crisis, which he connects to flawed border policy.

Those who survive crossing the border can remain under the control of the cartels while in the U.S., Dannels says. The so called “more humane” immigration policies of the new administration are not proving more humane for these people, he suggests.

In the past two months, 108,000 people have been apprehended crossing the Rio Grande illegally; whereas only 90,000 were arrested for the whole of 2020. Moreover, February saw a jump of 23,000 in the number of illegal-crossing apprehensions at the South West border.
