Daily News @ http://RevolutionNews.US — (TORONTO) A police officer appeared in a Toronto courtroom and pleaded guilty to one count of threatening bodily harm.
Christopher Hominuk, 37, was one of the officers who responded to a call last May 24 in relation to an Etobicoke area theft. Two suspects were taken into custody, handcuffed and placed in the back of different police cars. At the time, police were searching for a third suspect.
Cameras in the cruisers recorded Hominuk going into the back seat of each cruiser and threatening the suspects. The officer held a Taser to the first suspect's genitals and demanded to know the name of the third suspect. When the handcuffed man said he didn't know, Hominuk is quoted on the video as saying, "If you're lying to me, when I get you back to the station, I'm Tasering you in the fucking nuts."
Hominuk then went to the second police car, held the Taser to that suspect's neck and demanded the same information. The second suspect was also threatened with a Taser to the genitals.
Court was told that the Taser was never fired. After the hearing, Justice Hugh Fraser allowed the videos from the in-cruiser cameras to be released to the public.
Mark Pugash, a spokesperson for the Toronto Police Service was quoted in the Toronto Sun as describing Hominiuk's actions as "disgraceful, unacceptable and shocking."
Hominuk was arrested last June and has been suspended with pay since that time. He is to appear before Judge Fraser on June 24, 2011 for sentencing.
This incident is certain to revive the debate about the use of Tasers by police officers.
