Sergeant Yokoi was one of the surviving Japanese soldiers who fled into Guam's mountainous and jungle covered interior after the island was captured by US forces in 1944. There, living alone like Robinson Crusoe, Yokoi eked out an existence until the 1970s, refusing to surrender. He was one of several Japanese holdouts discovered almost three decades after the end of World War II.
