VAERS is a passive reporting system, meaning it relies on individuals to send in reports of their experiences. VAERS accepts reports from anyone. Patients, parents, caregivers and healthcare providers are encouraged to report adverse events after vaccination to VAERS even if it is not clear that the vaccine caused the adverse event. VAERS is not designed to determine if a vaccine caused a health problem.
