THE SCANDAL OF THE SHEFFIELD MEADOWHALL ‘GROOMING GANG’ TRIAL
The perpetrators allegedly ‘groomed’ the girls at the Meadowhall shopping centre.
JULY 2018 - Yasser Iqbal Hussain, Shahid Hussain, Azad Akram Raja, Faisel Hussain and a man not named for legal reasons were arrested and charged with a total of 21 offences relating to child sexual abuse and exploitation in Rotherham as part of a National Crime Agency Investigation
The alleged offences began when the girls were as young as 13 and occurred between 2001 and 2004.
JANUARY 2019 - it is reported that Shahid Hussain, one of the five men charged, has a warrant out for his arrest after failing to answer bail. The National Crime Agency later confirm that Hussain is believed to have left the country.
10 JUNE 2019 TRIAL 1 - 4 men go on trial accused of sexually abusing two girls aged 13-15
12 JUNE 2019 - the trial is stopped and adjourned until February 2020. No public explanation is given.
FEBRUARY 2020 TRIAL 2 - another trial begins with Azad Raja, Faisal Hussain, Yasser Iqbal Hussain and an unnamed man denying rape and indecent assault charges.
4 MARCH 2020 - the jury is discharged and no reason is given for why the trial has been abandoned again
9 MARCH 2020 - a new jury is sworn in and the trial begins again
18 MARCH 2020 - the trial is abandoned due to the coronavirus lockdown
OCTOBER 2020 TRIAL 3 - the four men appear and the trial concludes after two weeks.
22 OCTOBER 2020 - “Judge David Dixon discharged the jury at his discretion after they had been deliberating for two-and-a-half-days. A hearing will be held on December 10 to decide whether a re-trial should take place”
