The European Union did not prolong the embargo on arms supplies to the Syrian opposition. Beginning with the 1st of June, each country of the European Union can decide for itself whether it should help the opponents of Bashar Assad or not.

The prohibition on arms supplies, which was introduced in 2011, is expiring in a few days. The issue has not been closed yet. The EU will return to the discussion in August.

The idea of bringing the feuding parties to the table of negotiations found support among European politicians. The idea was proposed by Russia and the United States. In France, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry met again to discuss the details of the forum.

Recent reports on the possible use of chemical weapons in Syria cast a shadow on the upcoming meeting. French specialists will analyze the samples brought by
journalists of Le Monde newspaper. Should the information be confirmed, the U.S. will respond in a very tough way. Can it be tougher, though, when it goes about a conflict that has already claimed the lives of over 100,000 people?
