A revolutionary court in Iran sentenced lawyer and human rights activist Nasrin Sotoudeh to ten years in prison and 148 lashes. Given the previous sentence, the imprisonment term of the human rights activist now counts 15 years.
According to the woman's husband, Reza Handan Sotoudeh, his wife was found guilty on seven counts, including her participation in the collusion against the system and efforts to disturb public order. In total, the court sentenced Nasrin to 33 years in prison, but according to the Iranian law, she will serve ten years the longest.
The Iranian human rights activist was sentenced to 148 lashes for appearing in court without a hijab, as well as for another accusation.
Nasrin Sotoudeh actively supports the abolition of capital punishment in Iran and the obligation of Iranian women to wear the hijab. Prior to her arrest, Sotoudeh was working on several cases that were filed against women who were arrested for appearing in public without their headscarves in protest against the mandatory dress code in Iran.
In October 2012, she was awarded the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought. In September 2013, she was released along with 10 other political prisoners. In July 2018, Nasrin was arrested again and sentenced to five years in prison for espionage.
