The National Security Agency (NSA) has launched yet another high-powered charm offensive. The world's largest communications and cyber-warfare intelligence agency insists that it unprecedented surveillance infrastructure exists merely to protect U.S. national security from terrorists and foreign intelligence agents. In fact, the NSA conducts massive political and economic intelligence gathering in order to preserve the vested interests of the America's aristocracy.
After facts about NSA's massive global surveillance network came to light thanks to the revelations of NSA contractor and ex-CIA employee Edward Snowden, the Washington power elite circled the wagons in unison and proclaimed Snowden a traitor and NSA a virtuous protector of America's national security. President Barack Obama stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Republican House of Representatives Republican Speaker John Boehner, House Democratic Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, Democratic Senate Intelligence Committee Chair Dianne Feinstein, Republican House Intelligence Committee chair and former FBI agent Mike Rogers, and Secretary of State John Kerry in demanding that Snowden be returned to the United States to face a dubious justice system. Democrats and Republicans hurled invectives at any country involved with Snowden's flight as a political refugee: the Special Administrative Region of Hong Kong, the People's Republic of China, Russia, and Ecuador.

NSA Spied On Vatican And Top Catholic Cardinals, Says Italian Report
An Italian magazine is reporting that the National Security Agency (NSA) spied on internal communications at the Vatican and phone calls at the Domus Sanctae Marthae, the church residence where cardinals lived during the papal conclave and the pope's current home.
The weekly magazine, Panorama, reports in an issue that hits the streets on Thursday that the NSA labeled calls in and out of Vatican offices as "leadership intentions," "threats to the financial system," "foreign policy objectives," and "human rights." It says calls regarding this year's election of the new president of the Vatican Bank, Ernst von Freyberg, were also intercepted.
The magazine does not cite a source for the wiretapping allegations, but it does refer to WikiLeaks to suggest that Francis was being watched as far back as 2005 when he was the Archbishop of Buenos Aires.
