Military engineers exploded the natural dam, which was formed as a result of a massive landslide near the Bureiskaya Hydroelectric Power Plant in the Khabarovsk region of Russia's Far East.
A series of explosions was arranged to unblock the Bureya river. A large channel about 160 meters long and 35 meters wide was created to let the water flow in. The explosions were very powerful - military engineers had to use from ten to 56 tons of TNT.
The landslide blocked the channel of the Bureya river in early December of 2018. The natural dam blocked the flow of water completely. The goal is to make two channels through the rocks to let water flow as before. Nearly 500 people are involved in the work that they perform 24/7 before the onset of spring floods to rescue tens of settlements in the area from floodwaters. The military use large KamAZ trucks to deliver the explosives to the site of the landslide most of which remains under the water.
