First of all every generation thinks they are special and the end of the world is going to happen
to them in their lifetimes. We all think the end will fit our life story. I believe this is the natural human desire to be in the most important part of the human narrative. The truth is that civilizations take a long long time to collapse. Western culture and society are in decline but they haven't collapsed yet and there are varying degrees to that. I used to think it was energy and oil that would cause the collapse. I've also lived briefly in two post communist
societies that experienced a sort of collapse due to losing the oil in their economies. I witnessed and heard stories about hyperinflation. I learned about hungry old men dying of heart attacks when they saw young men walk by with a couple of loafs of bread. Don't kid yourself, you're not special enough to see the end. There are still relatively vast amounts of resources out there that mean western civilization will still go on for a few more centuries. Even when we burn up all the oil, coal and natural gas our computers and phones will get smaller and smaller and use less energy so we will be able to do more with less. People will shift to telecommuting instead of travelling to work each day in a personal vehicle. Self driving cars, when they come out will be lighter and use less material, meaning their energy efficiency will improve.
