Vladimir Putin has cleared the way to mobilise one million civilian reservists to fight Western-backed Ukraine, not 300,000 as officially announced, it has been claimed today.
A secret seventh article in his "partial mobilisation" presidential decree allows him to call up a total of one million people, a source told independent investigative media outlet Novaya Gazeta Europe.
The Russian President is said to be scared to reveal the truth to his citizens as he fears more dissidents will leave the country.
However, the Kremlin denied the claims, with state-owned news agency RIA citing Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov who called the report "a lie".
It comes after Putin and his defence minister Sergei Shoigu yesterday announced 300,000 Russians would be called up to fight in Ukraine.
Enlistment is underway today on a grand scale across Russia's 11 time zones, as seen in multiple videos.
Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov yesterday refused to disclose the content of the classified seventh article of the decree but admitted it related to the number of Russians to be mobilised, according to Kommersant newspaper.
The article was "for official use", he said.
Peskov added: "The only thing I can tell you...Sergei Shoigu said in his interview - 300,000 people [will be mobilised].
"We are talking about up to 300,000 people. And also, as the Minister of Defence explained, not all at once."
However, Novaya Gazeta said secret Article 7 hides the real figure which officials did not mention.
The defence ministry wanted his entire decree secret but in the end, only the seventh article was classified, it was claimed.
"The figure was corrected several times, and in the end, they settled on one million," said the Novaya Gazeta source.

"It is planned to mobilise 500,000 people by the end of the year and another 500,000 people by March next year," it stated.
The anti-Putin channel, which claims insider Kremlin sources, also claimed the "general estimate of losses by March next year is about 300,000 killed and wounded".
This is in addition to some 81,572 killed so far, according to the channel, which predicted in advance the mobilisation move by Putin.

Dissidents will find their bank accounts blocked, preventing them from obtaining money - including those who have fled abroad.

All Russian men are required to do a year's military service between the ages of 18 and 27, although university students may instead receive instruction from a military faculty alongside their chosen studies.

Russia's President Vladimir Putin has announced a partial military mobilization in the Russian Federation, according to the Tass news agency.

In a televised address, Putin said he had signed a decree on partial mobilization, due to begin on Wednesday, stressing that he was taking necessary steps to protect Russia's sovereignty as the West is looking to "weaken" and "destroy" the country.

“We are talking about partial mobilization, that is, only citizens who are currently in the reserve will be subject to conscription, and above all, those who served in the armed forces have a certain military specialty and relevant experience,” Putin said.

The decision to partially mobilize is “fully adequate to the threats we face, namely to protect our homeland, its sovereignty and territorial integrity, to ensure the security of our people and people in the liberated territories,” he added.

The Russian president said his aim was to "liberate" east Ukraine's Donbas region, and that most people in the region did not want to return to what he called the "yoke" of Ukraine.

He also accused the West of ordering Ukraine to undermine peace talks with Moscow, saying the West would not be "happy with a peaceful" solution to the conflict.

Putin’s address to the nation came a day after four Ukrainian regions announced plans to hold referendums to join Russia in a matter of days, mirroring the move that was taken by the former Ukrainian region of Crimea in 2014, which led to its incorporation into the Russian Federation.

Speaking on Tuesday, the pro-Russian leaders of the eastern regions of Donetsk and Luhansk, the southern region of Kherson, and the southeastern region of Zaporizhzhia announced that they were planning to hold the votes as soon as Friday.

Russia has warned if the United States supplies Ukraine with longer-range missiles, Washington will cross a “red line” and become “a party to the conflict,” more than six months into Moscow’s military operation in the ex-Soviet republic.

In a press conference on Thursday, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Russia “reserves the right to defend its territory.”

“If Washington decides to supply longer-range missiles to Kiev, then it will be crossing a red line, and will become a direct party to the conflict,” she warned.

Russia began its “special military operation” in Ukraine on February 24, with a declared aim of “demilitarizing” Donbas, which is made up of the Donetsk and Luhansk self-proclaimed republics. The US has already provided Kiev with advanced rockets capable of hitting targets up to 80 kilometers away, while so far refusing to publicly announce it would send rockets with more than double that range.

Since the beginning of the war, the US has been providing Kiev with military aid, including at least 16 HIMARS systems, four of which arrived in August.

HIMARS is a light multiple-rocket launcher that can hit targets with precision. It is capable of launching all rockets specified in the Multiple Launch Rocket System Family of Munitions (MFOM).Its manufacturer, Lockheed Martin, says the system has a “recognized and proven range” of up to 300 kilometers.

While Kiev implores for more Western weapons, Moscow says it sent troops to prevent Ukraine being used as a platform for Western aggression and to defend Russian speakers in Donbas.

Separately on Thursday, German Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht said Berlin would supply two more multiple-rocket launchers to Kiev.

“We have decided to deliver two more MARS II multiple rocket launchers including 200 rockets to Ukraine,” she told a Bundeswehr conference in Berlin.

Mars II MLRS is a German multiple-rocket launcher adopted by the Bundeswehr back in 1990. It is a certified European version of the American M270 MLRS multiple-rocket launcher.

The system, according to its manufacturer, uses the same projectiles as the M142 HIMARS, but has two containers instead of one, capable of firing 12 rockets in one salvo, rather than six.

“On top of this, we will send 50 Dingo armored personnel carriers to Ukraine,” Lambrecht said, referring to an armored vehicle the German army extensively used during NATO's military operation in Afghanistan.

Back in July, Lambrecht announced Berlin had sent three MARS II MLRS and a total of 10 PZH-2000 self-propelled guns to Ukraine from Bundeswehr warehouses.

- The AFU are only at 43-48% strength
- medical workers at their limit
- small arms and armor are not enough
- 191 thousand soldiers were killed and wounded (only AFU, not including others)
- there is not enough hydraulics and liquid nitrogen for M777 howitzers
- no one cares about the missing - there are no statistics
- the equipment transferred by the West is running out
- western weapons are operated by amateurs, since there are no qualified specialists

The documents look legit. The overall numbers and issues mentioned seem plausible to me. The high number of casualties (plus the missing) is not astonishing. It would be astonished though if the Russian army and its allies have more than one tenth of those. This is mostly an artillery war and the Russian side has had a vast superiority in guns and missiles.
I wonder about the M-777 need for hydraulic oil and nitrogen. Both are used in the hydraulic recoil mechanism of such guns. Back when I was in the military we had similar mechanisms in our tanks. But they did not consume oil or nitrogen due to normal operation. Only larger maintenance, like changing the gun barrel, would require a readjustment of that mechanism. Is the 'light' howitzer M-777 so badly constructed that those fluids and gases can leak out and thereby become consumables?

The Ukraine has acknowledged that its main reinforced defense line west of Donetsk city has been broken:

The breakthrough happened after the Ukraine had moved many artillery units from the Donetsk to the southern front. That also explains the lack of counter-battery fire in the east an eyewitness recently lamented about.

Ukraine said the Russian offensive in the east looked like an attempt to force it to divert troops from the south where Kyiv's forces are trying to retake territory and destroy Russian supply lines as a prelude to a wider counter-offensive.

Last year, state owned China General Nuclear (CGN) announced that the EPR reactor at the Taishan plant, about 80 miles west of Hong Kong, was shut down for “maintenance” after cracks in the fuel rods were discovered.
In a statement in Chinese on its website, CGN said: "A small amount of fuel damage has occurred during the operation of Unit 1, but it is still within the allowable range of technical specifications, and the unit can continue to operate stably.
"Combined with the start of construction of the power grid ... we chose this time to shut down for maintenance.“
EDF, along with CGN as a junior partner, is currently building the Hinkley Point C reactor in Somerset and is currently negotiating plans to build a second station, Sizewell C in Suffolk, both of which use the same EPR reactor design.
As the UK invests heavily in nuclear energy in a bid to end its reliance on fossil fuels, EDF’s EPR reactors have come under increased scrutiny.....

Hinkley B: Generations of workers mark nuclear plant's shutdown

Workers at the Hinkley B nuclear power site have been marking the plant's closure, as the reactor is switched off after 46 years.
"It's the end of an era. We'll go from making electric to making flasks [of nuclear waste]," said Pete Bryan, who has clocked up 34 years at the site.
The workers who ran the plant will now stay on for the next few years to help decommission the site.
Paul Gallagher, whose two brothers and daughter also work there, said he was "fortunate" to have spent 12 years on the site.
Mr Gallagher has enjoyed his time working at Hinkley B
"The company looked after the employees well, and that's not the corporate view that's my view.
"It's in such a beautiful part of the country so why wouldn't you want to work here?
"It will be sad to see a station and plant that is in good shape not generating any more," he said.

A statement from Avon and Somerset police said they had tried to facilitate a peaceful protest and to make sure the event was allowed to take place unhindered. "Police this afternoon detained a woman outside Hillfields Library in connection with an alleged common assault on a man," the spokesperson said. "The incident happened during a protest and counter-protest about a drag queen touring libraries in Bristol reading a children's story.

Drag Queen Story Hour UK was set to see drag queen Aida H Dee perform some of her own stories to young children and their parents at half a dozen libraries in Bristol, as part of the Story Hour's summer tour across the country. The tour began in Reading on Monday, but protesters stormed the event - some with their own children - to protest, which meant police had to get involved and escort the drag queen, who grew up in Bristol, to her next event location while forming a human wall to protect her from assault or any protesters carrying out a 'citizen's arrest'. Guardian columnist and environmentalist George Monbiot is calling for livestock farming to be stopped as it is a 'phenomenally profligate way' to make food.
In his new book 'Regenesis: Feeding the World Without Devouring the Planet', he suggests the world turns to bacteria foods for protein instead of meat and dairy. Unsurprisingly the author's claims have been met with criticism from farmers who accuse Monbiot of having an ‘anti-rural agenda’.
Monbiot described farming as the ‘most destructive force ever to have been unleashed by humans', and that livestock farmers will not be able to sustainably keep up with global food demand. Instead the world should produce industrial quantities of protein powder using bacteria for foods such as ‘protein pancakes’.
Countryside Alliance chief executive, Tim Bonner, responded: “Without farmers, our countryside risks becoming a wasteland. George Monbiot is welcome to eat sludge manufactured in laboratories to alleviate his hysteria, but the future of a healthy countryside lies in a buoyant domestic market here in the UK for sustainable, grass-fed red meat.”

PRINCESS Diana had "no regrets" over her interview with Martin Bashir - and the image of her as a "foolish" woman who was conned is offensive, her biographer claims.

Tina Brown said Diana was no "vulnerable victim of the media" and felt "pleased" about the Panorama interview.

In May, a bombshell report into the 1995 chat found that ex BBC journalist Bashir acted in "serious breach" of the broadcaster's guidelines to secure the interview.

Princes William and Harry both condemned the journalist in separate statements, while Diana's brother Earl Spencer told of his fury and horror.

Lord Dyson’s report revealed Bashir fabricated information to “deceive” Diana into agreeing to talk.

He commissioned fake bank statements to persuade her that officials were being paid by MI5 and the media for information about her, before showing them to Earl Spencer to win his trust.

The reporter also told Diana her phone was bugged and Prince Charles was having an affair with their sons’ nanny, Tiggy Legge-Bourke.

Blameless Ms Legge-Bourke - who now goes by Tiggy Pettifer - has been paid "substantial" damages by the BBC for the smear.

After being presented with the deceit, Diana granted Bashir an interview - famously revealing "there were three of us" in her marriage to Charles.

But Ms Brown told the Telegraph the princess has been portrayed as a "foolish, duped child" in a way she finds "offensive".

“While strongly sympathetic to her sons’ pain, I find it offensive to present the canny, resourceful Diana as a woman of no agency, as either a foolish, duped child or the hapless casualty of malevolent muckrakers," she said.

Following Lord Dyson's report, William issued a rare on-camera statement telling of his "indescribable sadness" and belief that the BBC's failures "contributed significantly to her fear, paranoia and isolation".

And Harry said: “The ripple effect of a culture of exploitation and unethical practices ultimately took her life.

However, Ms Brown said the princess "didn't have a bad word to say about Martin Bashir" and the interview left her "with the public in the palm of her hand".

Sizzling, sweltering or scorching – whichever way you describe it, this summer has already been a memorably hot one.

We are currently enjoying the longest spell of blazing sunshine for seven years after enduring a succession of washouts.

But what other historic heatwaves have stood the test of time to be remembered as truly Great British Summers? Below are our top five of the last century:

2003

The highest temperature ever recorded in Britain was set during the sizzling summer of 2003, when the 100-Fahrenheit mark was broken for the first and only time.

The mercury soared to 38.5C (101.3F) at Brogdale, near Faversham, Kent, on August 10, smashing the previous 1990 record of 37.1C (98.8F).

Across Europe, around 70,000 people are believed to have died during the worst heatwave on the continent for almost 500 years.

Britain luckily escaped the worst following a cool and wet two-week period at the end of July and beginning of August.

It led to the worst drought for 27 years and wilting crops led to a 12% shortfall in wheat, causing the price of bread to soar.

But most Britons were simply content to enjoy what was the first sustained heatwave in almost a decade with, notably, a mud-free Glastonbury festival for once.

1976

The hottest British summer on record was 1976, when for 25 straight days the temperature hit at least 26.7C (80F).

For 15 days during the spell, between June 22 and July 16, the mercury soared beyond 32.2C (90F) somewhere in England.

The temperature exceeded 35C (95F) for five blistering days of the heatwave, peaking at 35.9C (96.6F) on July 3 in Cheltenham.

It was perfect weather for women to wear the some of the decade’s notoriously skimpy outfits, although not so great for men with long hair and flairs.

But there were major downsides as Britain suffered its worst drought in history, with water being rationed in some places by standpipes in the streets.

Some areas went without rain from the start of the main heatwave until the last week of August.

1959

Prior to 1976, the most memorably hot summer had been in 1959.

Blue skies dominated the horizons for weeks with most places in southern England seeing temperatures above 21C (70F) for at least 100 days.

It was remembered as a gloriously long and comfortable summer – with only five days exceeding 30C (86f) - and few downpours to spoil picnics.

In fact, there was so little rain that the five months between May and September remain the driest on record and resulted in a drought.

A British Pathé newsreel captured the mood of the nation by reporting – with a degree of astonishment - the first downpour of the summer.

"That stuff, yes it’s called rain, something we used to have in England a long time ago," begins the commentary before showing footage of a parched landscape.

1949

The summer of 1949 – which was the hottest in 30 years – also saw one of the worst droughts on record.

A heatwave between mid-June and the end of July exacerbated the water shortages caused by an earlier dry winter.

In London, even nighttime temperatures did not drop below 24C (75C) during this period.

People took to sleeping in Hyde Park and other cool green spaces rather than sweating in their beds at home.

Areas hit by drought included bone-dry Rivington Reservoir near Preston and the unnavigable Leeds-Liverpool Canal near Burnley, both in normally wet Lancashire.

Many in rural areas were left without any supply and water wagons – cars carrying the precious liquid in pails? – were filmed driving around offering it to houses.

And, in Derbyshire, a 100ft drop in levels at the Ladybower Reservoir brought to the surface the remains of the village of Derwent, which was flooded in 1943.

Amid the ongoing ravaging war with Ukraine which continues unabated, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov claimed that the collective West is afraid of honest competition and, as a result, behaves "deceitfully" by cancelling the culture of any nation with a strong national identity.

"The West is scared of honest competition, this is widely known. This is why they ‘cancel’ the culture of any country speaking from its own nationally oriented positions, prohibit TV channels from broadcasting, ban unwanted politicians on social networks and remove everything from the public space that disagrees with the neo-liberal concept of the world order," he told the national broadcaster of Belarus, the TASS news agency reported.

Lavrov also echoed Russian President Vladimir Putin's recent comments where he termed the West an "empire of lies."

"I absolutely agree with President Putin," the Russian Foreign Minister added. Speaking further, he also slammed the Ukrainian government for "spreading lies" to justify its actions. "It is of no surprise to me that lies have become the Ukrainian government’s stock-in-trade. This was true for the government of Petro Poroshenko and the same applies to incumbent President Vladimir Zelenskyy," Lavrov asserted.

Talks with Ukraine in existing formats make no sense: Lavrov

The Russian Foreign Minister also asserted that that holding talks with Ukraine in the same formats that existed for the last eight years would make no sense. He claimed that past formats were of little help when asked if a fresh version of an agreement with Ukraine, something that might be referred to as the Minsk-3 pact, should be drafted. "It would be senseless in the formats that we used for negotiations in the past eight years," he added, as per the TASS.

Following Putin’s announcement about selling gas for Rubles only to hostile nations, I decided to reach out to Michael Hudson and ask him (my level, primitive) questions. Here is our full email exchange:

Andrei: Russia has declared that she will only sell gas to “hostile countries” for Rubles. Which means that to non-hostile countries she will continue to sell in Dollars/Euros. Can these hostile countries still purchase gas from Russia but via third countries?

Michael Hudson: There seem to be two ways for hostile countries to buy Russian gas. One seems to be to use Russian banks that are not banned from SWIFT. The other way would indeed seem to be to go through what looks to develop as a formal or informal third-country bank or exchange. India and China would seem to be the best positioned for this role. U.S. diplomats will be pressing India to impose its own sanctions on Russia, and there is a strong pro-U.S. constituency there. But even Modi sees the obvious superior benefits of benefiting from India’s geopolitical position with Russia and China’s Belt and Road Initiative relative to whatever the U.S. has to

Back in the 1960s the West dealt with the Soviet Union using barter deals. Arranging this barter became a big banking business. Barter is the typical “final stage” of the deterioration of a credit economy into a money economy that breaks down. Over the medium term, a new international financial organization needs to be created as an alternative to the dollarized IMF to handle such intra-bloc transactions in today’s new multipolarizing world.

Andrei: These hostile nations would pay extra for that service, but they would not have to get Rubles. Is that even possible?

Michael Hudson: Presumably Russia would not absorb the added bank costs of avoiding U.S. sanctions. It would simply add them on to the price, after setting the price at which it hopes to end up with – preferably at the original “old” ruble/euro or ruble/dollar exchange rate, not the post-attack depreciated rate.

Andrei: Question: Do you believe that the EU will agree to pay Roubles or will they take the total loss of 40% of their energy?

Michael Hudson: They will pay – or be voted out of office. If they WERE to cut their energy imports from Russia, the distress-price of gas would soar and there would be drastic shortages disrupting the economy. Energy is productivity and GDP. For Russia, of course, this is an opportunity to make the break now instead of later – and leave NATO to take the blame for the interruption of supply. So if I were Russia, I would not be in a hurry to help solve the foreign-payment problem. The same goes for non-oil raw materials, from neon to palladium to titanium, nickel and aluminum.

Andrei: So far, this applies only to natural gas. Do you believe that Russia will extend this to petroleum, wheat and fertilizers and, if yes, what will the effect from this be for the world economy?

Michael Hudson: All Russian exports are affected by these currency controls, because all bank transfers are sanctioned in the way discussed above. Russia has no use for dollars or euros, because these can be grabbed. It needs to have complete control over whatever monetary assets it receives, now that past norms of international law and financial policy no longer apply.

Andrei: Russia has A LOT of natural resources and a lot of technologies/commodities. If she is successful in her efforts to become paid in Rubles, could it be that the Ruble, which would then be a natural resources/ commodities backed currency, could become a major “refuge” currency.

Michael Hudson: I’m not sure what a “refuge” currency is, but the ruble will become a self-standing currency. If its balance of trade and payment improves, the problem may be to keep it from rising. If that happens, the question will be whether a rising ruble would oblige buyers of Russian exports to pay more in their own currency. A new multilateral financial system is in the process of being structured as we’re having this discussion. Will there be speculation? Forward selling? Short squeezes and Soros-type raids? Who will be the participants and under what rules …?

Some knowledgeable people, apparently including the Pope, are beginning to suspect that there may be more going on in the world than just the war in the Ukraine. They say that World War 3 has already started and things will get worse from now on. This can be difficult to determine while we are participating in the unfolding events and do not have the benefit of the historical perspective. It is doubtful that people back in 1939 realized that they were looking at the start of a major worldwide conflict, although some may have suspected it.

The current global situation is in many ways like a giant jigsaw puzzle where the general public only sees a tiny part of the complete picture. Most don’t even realize that there may be more pieces and don’t even ask these simple questions: Why is all this happening and why is it happening now?

Things are more complicated than most people realize. What they see is the evil wizard Vladimir Saruman Putin invading innocent Ukraine with his orc army ­ for absolutely no reason. This is a simplistic view, to say the least because nothing happens without a reason. Let’s put things in perspective and see what is really going on ­ and why the world is going crazy before our eyes. Let’s see what World War 3 is all about.

The pressure cooker

The West (which we can define here as the US and the EU and a few more) has been maintaining pressure on the entire world for decades. This does not only apply to countries outside the West, but also to Western countries which strayed from the diktats of the West’s rulers. This pressure has been discussed widely and attributed to all kinds of motives, including neocolonialism, forced financial hegemony, and so forth. What is interesting, particularly during the last 20 years, is which countries have been pressured and what they do not have in common.

Among the pressured countries we find Russia, China, Cuba, Venezuela, Libya, Syria, Serbia, Thailand, and Iran to mention a few. There have also been recent additions, including India and Hungary. In order to understand why they have been pressured, we need to find out what they have in common. That’s not easy since they are extremely different in most ways. There are democracies and non-democracies, conservative and communist governments, Christian, Muslim and Buddhist countries, and so on. Still, many of them are very clearly allied. One must ask why conservative and religious countries such as Russia or Iran would ally themselves with Godless communists in Cuba and Venezuela.

What all these countries have in common is their desire to run their own affairs; to be independent countries. This is unforgivable in the eyes of the West and must be tackled by any means necessary, including economic sanctions, color revolutions, and outright military aggression.

The West and its NATO military arm had surrounded Russia with hostile countries and military bases, armed and manipulated Ukraine to be used as a hammer against it, and employed sanctions and threats. The same thing was and is happening in Asia where China is being surrounded by all means available. The same applies to all the Independents mentioned above to some extent. In the past 10 years or so the pressure has increased massively on the Independents and it reached almost a fever pitch in the year before the Russian invasion of the Ukraine.

During the year before the Ukraine war, the US sent its diplomats around the world to tune up the pressure. They were like a travelling circus or a rock band on a tour, but instead of entertainment, they delivered threats: buy this from us and do what we tell you or there will be consequences. The urgency was absolute and palpable, but then came the Ukraine war and the pressure went up to 11. During the first month of the war, the entire West’s diplomatic corps was fully engaged in threats against the ‘rest of the world’ to engineer the isolation of Russia. This didn’t work, which resulted in panic in political and diplomatic circles in the US and Europe.

All this pressure through the years, and all the fear and panic when it didn’t work, are clearly related to the events in the Ukraine. They are a part of the same ‘syndrome’ and have the same cause....

London is continuing to push Ukraine “down the warpath” by providing military support and arms deliveries, Russian Ambassador to the UK Andrey Kelin claimed on Tuesday.

He added that British Prime Minister Boris Johnson speaks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky “every other day,” and apparently “does not let him to turn off this path.”

“London has been driving Kiev down the warpath with all its might, this is important, and has not allowed it to turn away, voicing new initiatives. There are constant reports that new weapons are about to be delivered,” the ambassador said in an interview with Rossiya 24 TV channel.

Meanwhile, London is trying to “isolate” Russian diplomats to make it more difficult for them to communicate Moscow’s position, Kelin added, including in relation to the military conflict in Ukraine.

“As for the embassy, until recently there was no one to explain our position on what is happening now, since official London is trying to isolate our diplomatic work from the rest of the world by making contacts difficult. Parliamentary relations have also ceased. It is difficult, I can tell you, but we are working,” he said.

The ambassador also claimed that the media landscape in the UK had been “completely cleared” of diversity, and it is now impossible to find “any alternative article” following the imposition of sanctions on media outlets such as RT and Sputnik.

Since the beginning of the Russian military offensive in Ukraine, Britain has been one of Moscow’s harshest critics and one of the main supporters of Kiev. London is also one of the key arms suppliers for Ukraine, having provided more than $3 billion in aid, much of which came in the form of weapons and other military hardware.

Russia attacked its neighboring state in late February, following Ukraine’s failure to implement the terms of the Minsk agreements, first signed in 2014, and Moscow’s eventual recognition of the Donbass republics of Donetsk and Lugansk. The German- and French-brokered protocol was designed to give the breakaway regions special status within the Ukrainian state.

The Kremlin has since demanded that Ukraine officially declare itself a neutral country that will never join the US-led NATO military bloc. Kiev insists the Russian offensive was completely unprovoked and has denied claims it was planning to retake the two republics by force.

Andrei Kelin said that would only happen if Russia’s “existence is threatened” by the West. When Putin put his nuclear forces on high alert in late February it was widely perceived as a threat.

He blamed “aggression” by the West and Nato, and has previously said he believes the West is trying to destroy his country.

But Mr Kelin said it was not Russia’s intention to use them in its war on Ukraine. He told Clive Myrie on BBC One’s Sunday Morning: “It has nothing to do with the current operation.”

In the face of evidence, the ambassador also claimed allegations of Russian war crimes in Bucha were made up. More than 1,000 bodies were recovered in the city, Northwest of Kyiv, following occupation by Kremlin troops in March. Mr Kelin said: “In our view, it is a fabrication.”

Ukraine’s prosecutors are investigating nearly 14,000 cases of war crimes by Russian forces. There may be more than 100,000. Mr Kelin went on to brand Foreign Secretary Liz Truss “very belligerent” and inexperienced. His remarks came after the leaders of France and Germany implored Putin to talk direct with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Emmanuel Macron and Olaf Scholz spoke with the Russian despot for 80 minutes. Meanwhile, Ukrainian MP Kira Rudyk begged the UK Government to give her country missiles, waive refugee visas and help to unblock its ports.

Ms Rudyk, who meets the Defence Committee today, said: “The world right now only has 10 weeks’ supplies of grains."

“Politicians of the world need to figure out how to get out all the harvest that Ukraine has.”
