The "Deutschlandlied" (English: "Song of Germany", German pronunciation: [ˈdɔʏtʃlantˌliːt]; also known as "Das Lied der Deutschen", or "The Song of the Germans"), or part of it, has been the national anthem of Germany since 1922, except in East Germany, whose anthem was "Auferstanden aus Ruinen" ("Risen from Ruins") from 1949 to 1990.

Since World War II and the fall of Nazi Germany, only the third stanza has been used as the national anthem. The stanza's beginning, "Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit" ("Unity and Justice and Freedom") is considered the unofficial national motto of Germany, and is inscribed on modern German Army belt buckles and the rims of some German coins.

The music is the hymn "Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser", written in 1797 by the Austrian composer Joseph Haydn as an anthem for the birthday of Francis II, Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire and later of Austria. In 1841, the German linguist and poet August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben wrote the lyrics of "Das Lied der Deutschen" as a new text for that music, counterposing the national unification of Germany to the eulogy of a monarch, lyrics that were considered revolutionary at the time.

The song is also well known by the beginning and refrain of the first stanza, "Deutschland, Deutschland über alles" ("Germany, Germany above all else"), but this has never been its title. The line "Germany, Germany above all else" meant that the most important goal of 19th-century German liberal revolutionaries should be a unified Germany which would overcome loyalties to the local kingdoms, principalities, duchies and palatines (Kleinstaaterei) of then-fragmented Germany. Along with the flag of Germany, it was one of the symbols of the March Revolution of 1848.

In order to endorse its republican and liberal tradition, the song was chosen as the national anthem of Germany in 1922, during the Weimar Republic. West Germany adopted the "Deutschlandlied" as its official national anthem in 1952 for similar reasons, with only the third stanza sung on official occasions. Upon German reunification in 1990, only the third stanza was confirmed as the national anthem.

Skaldic Bard wrote this song in Old Frankish, the language of the Franks, a Germanic tribe who would play a vital role for the genesis of Germany ... and France!
Frankish was about to merge into Old High German at the time. The specific dialect used here is an Austrasian one, named after a historical region.

Karl Martell/ Karl der Hammer, or Charles Martel in English, was a Frankish nobleman who lived from ~688 to 741. "Martel(l)" is not his family name, it is a term for a hammer. He earned that monicker in the event that is covered in this song: the 732 Battle of Poitiers/Tours, in which Karl Martell defeated an army of the Umayyad Caliphate. Later generations, especially after the Middle Ages, considered him a savior of the western, Christian world and Europe as we know it because of this feat, although more recent studies have contested the weight of his achievement.
In any case, Karl Martell was a very important historical figure. He was not king (which is why I translated "kuning", normally "König" in German and "king" in English) as ruler instead. You could also call him "leader" or "Princeps" or something. In any case, the term "kuning" covers more than just "king", although it would have been fair to call Karl a "de facto" king: the ruling dynasty, the Merovingians, had gradually lost their power over the course of generations, and the men holding the title "Mayor of the Palace" had become the actual most powerful people in the realm. They were in control of the royal treasury, dispensed patronage, and granted land and privileges in the name of the figurehead king.

Karl's father, Pippin/Pepin, had held that title and amassed more power than any Mayor of the Palace before him, but once Pippin had died in 714, Karl had to fight and win a civil war against own family members and other opponents before he could consolidate his power. Karl was not a formally acknowledged son of Pippin at first, he was originally not supposed to come to power. But once he had conquered the throne, Karl proved to be an effective military and political leader who expanded his own power. He would go down in history as the namesake of the Carolingian dynasty, his son Pippin "the younger/the short" would finally take the title of king from the Merovingians. The son of this Pippin was Charles the Great/Charlemagne. Karl Martell's legacy is a very powerful and lasting one, as his grandson would be considered the founder of the Holy Roman Empire by reviving the title of emperor in western Europe after centuries. The Carolingians ruled for many more generations, and it was Karl who had laid the groundwork.

The song takes inspiration from other works, most notably the Ludwigslied/Song of Ludwig: It's a 9th century text praising a later Carolingian king named Ludwig for defeating a heathen army (of Northmen). It will also be uploaded on this channel at some point. Another bit comes from a 9th century German translation of the Diatesseron, a gospel harmony written by a man called Tatian in the 2nd century. The Odo mentioned is Duke Odo of Aquitania, whose territory was attacked by the Umayyads.

The Bozner Bergsteigerlied (English: Bozen mountaineer song) is one of the two unofficial hymns of the South Tyroleans, the other being the Andreas-Hofer-Lied. Its lyrics were composed in 1926 by Karl Felderer in Moos am Ritten to the melody of an old Tyrolean craftsmen's song.

At the time of its composition, the Italianization of South Tyrol campaign of the Italian fascists had reached its height, effecting a prohibition of all names related to "Südtirol" and "Deutsch-Südtirol". Therefore, the lyrics never mention South Tyrol directly, referring instead to its geographical extension.

Der Lüner Wind is a song for which the Lünen couple Elli and Ferdinand Wegerich wrote the lyrics. The refrain of the four-verse work is “This is the wind, wind, wind, the Lüner Wind, it will still be blowing when we are long gone.” It was already included on a portrait record about Lünen in 1981.
Lünen is a town with around 86,000 inhabitants in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is located north of Dortmund, on both banks of the River Lippe. It is the largest town of the Unna district and part of the Ruhr Area.
The song is based on “Pfälzer Wind” and has different variations also for Werne, Heessen and Dortmund beside Lünen (for example: Der Südkirchener Wind).

Erika is a soldier love song from Herms Niel in 1938. Even though Erika was a soldier song it became a common folk song after WW2 and has been interpreted by many German singers and the German Bundeswehr. Youtube however declared Erika one of the most struck traditional German songs for the reason “hatespeech”. Looking at the lyrics this is obviously ridiculous:

The Codex Manesse is a manuscript from ~1305, it features songs of ~140 poets, who are presented in images depicting them in certain symbolic situations. Their order is not dictated by their fame as an artist or by the number of songs, but by social rank.
The author of this song occupies the 9th spot, his name was Johann/Jan, Duke of Brabant (1252-1294, on May 3). Brabant is now in the Netherlands and Belgium. His reign is often seen as the most glorious era for Brabant, so it's no wonder he enjoyed a very good reputation during and after his life.
Jan/Johann was also Margrave of Antwerp and - after the War of Limburg Succession (1283-1289) - Duke of Limburg, and he was made Imperial Advocate of the Lower Rhine region in 1292, signifying his status as a powerful and respected ruler within the Holy Roman Empire. He was called "the Victorious".
The duke enjoyed and promoted the fine arts, but he also was a fierce warrior, killing many rivals in battle while still being hailed as an example of chivalry.
No wonder he is depicted as a mighty knight in the manuscript! However, he was gravely injured during a knightly tournament, leading to his death. He remains a beloved and celebrated figure, especially in Brabant. A beer brand is named after him as well!

Johann/Jan wrote nine songs in total, the great Codex Manesse is the only source we have. This audio here does not exactly follow the text in the manuscript: the lyrics of this audio are "reverse-engineered" into a medieval stage of what would later be seen as Dutch. I found an article from 1858 in the German academic newspaper "Germania" where August Hoffmann von Fallersleben (1798-1874), a scholar and the man who wrote the German national anthem, attempts this "Dutchification" himself, citing a fellow scholar named Willems to have tried this before him in 1848. The text of the Codex Manesse is not exactly what Johann/Jan wrote, as there are a few decades between his death and the compilation of the Codex (which also happened elsewhere, probably in Zürich, now Switzerland). Von Fallersleben talked about "bringing the text back to his original form", and it's quite likely that he and Willems came very close. This is the result.
Dutch and German form a dialect continuum, meaning that - apart from the standard versions of these languages, which obviously differ despite being closely related - there are many dialects that transcend borders and exhibit similarities and shared features. As you move from the north of the Netherlands to the south of Germany/Austria/Switzerland, the dialects gradually change and eventually end up very different, but there is no clear point where one language ends and the other begins. The people of the Middle Ages also spoke in many, many variations, depending on where exactly they came from. There was no "official" spelling either, but everything still belonged together somehow.
All of this shows how much people in Germany and the Low Countries share: culture, language, history. They all were part of the "Teuton" part of the HRE for centuries, and "Dutch" and "Deutsch" are not coincidentally similar words.

Oh, one more thing: You might be wondering what "Harba lori fa" means. It's probably of Occitan/Provencal origin. The most popular hypothesis is that it means "The herb flourishes/grows!", which could be understood as something erotic. I also struggled with the "let it stand" at the end of the 3rd stanza. It's a strange way to phrase things, perhaps it means "don't do it", or perhaps it's a positive response and also erotic. I think it is supposed to be double-edged, and I went with the word-by-word translation to let you decide.
