Illegal migrants are being "packed like sardines" into dangerous inflatable boats by people smugglers to cross the English channel - that's according to police.

In recent days the number of people coming into the UK illegally over the Channel has surged with the number almost treble compared with this time last year.

The Times reports that Border Force and police sources say this was partially due to people smugglers using bigger boats — however, many were the same size as the vessels seized last year.
