Make no mistake, Elon Musk is actively participating in the war against Russia on the side of Ukraine. With his near-bottomless resources, he has at his command a strong influencing force that will undoubtedly cause unique effects on the outcome of the war. He has been participating by rallying his fanbase’s support around the Ukrainian cause, which will only increase the popular perception of Ukraine as a freedom-fighting David standing in opposition to the Russian Goliath. Even more directly, he has sent Starlink satellites to Ukraine to be able to serve the communication needs of regular civilians and journalists, and probably the military as well. The Ukrainian Armed Forces have been resisting the Russian onslaught much better than expected, and the world has come to terms with the importance of knowing more than your enemy. Not only was popular demand and the pulling of Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister instrumental in getting Musk to back Ukraine, the loss of Tesla’s stock price due to the invasion was also a major factor. Add to that the Russian space agency head’s disparaging comment about SpaceX satellites being ‘broomsticks’, and you can understand why Musk has more than a few good reasons to back Ukraine. While he is very much against Russia, it does not mean that he would block access to Russian information, thereby sticking to his principles valuing free speech.
