During the time of its founding the OUN was seen as an outsider movement and was in stark contrast to the highly popular Ukrainian National Democratic Alliance that argued for a constitutionally democratic Ukraine accomplished by peaceful actions. The OUN not only accepted violence as a means of Ukrainian Independence, but also saw violence as the only answer. The OUN began terrorizing Southern Poland and Northern Ukraine, destroying rail lines bridges and roads and also targeting Polish politicians, harassing them, threatening their lives and are credited with assassinating 63 people. The estimate of how many were killed is likely a much smaller number than which they can actually be credited. The victims varied in ethnicity but all shared common political views, some of those assassinated were:
Emilian Czechowski with a gunshot to the back of the head, Lvov’s Polish police commissioner, Tadeusz Holowko, a leader of the Ukrainian-Polish compromise movement, Alexei Mailov a Soviet consular officer, Bronislaw Pieracki, Polish interior minister and Ivan Babij a former Sich Riflemen, teacher who had became a renowned promoter of moderate views which led to the OUN’s hatred for even their former brother in arms.
