The names Pakeha and Maori both originated during the colonization of NZ. Many people believe the Pakeha means white pig and Maori means ordinary or common people. When really Maori means some who tastes and smells nice when cooked like the smell of a pig. These names arose from colonial times. Maori means children of Maui.
When Captain Cook arrived at Cooks Beach New Zealand the Maoris called them Pukepakeha meaning someone who tastes nice on a ship. This is something many white people consider a racist term but was denied by TV One Seven Sharp Jeremy Wells and Hilary Barry.
