“Feminist critics of biomedicine tend to view the medical profession as an elite, patriarchal institution in whose everyday practices gender inequalities are played out. Feminist researchers draw attention to the construction of women in healthcare encounters as passive, submissive, unintelligent, deviant, or hypochondriac. The notion of the clinical gaze (Michel Foucault) has been taken up by feminist sociologists and health activists to critique the medical appropriation of women’s bodies. “(from Social Theory, Health and Healthcare, p. 164).
