President Trump, Please Liberate Hong Kong.
That was the message on full display in Hong Kong this past weekend as thousands took to the streets to protest the Communist Beijing government and its perceived encroachment on the autonomy of Hong Kong. With the 1997 transfer of rule over Hong Kong from Britain to China, certain freedoms and autonomy were guaranteed through at least 2047. In recent months, however, the mainland China (Beijing) government has taken steps to try to integrate Hong Kong with the rest of China, moves that the citizenry here are not happy with. Week after week of protests have ensued, now stretching into their fourth consecutive month. People call on the United Kingdom to act and enforce their 1997 Sino-British Joint Declaration with China. They are also calling on the United States, and President Donald Trump in particular, to leverage the power and influence of the USA to pressure China into upholding that original agreement as well. How these protesters demands and calls for action will be met remains to be seen, but the people are fired up and show no signs of backing down for the time being.
