Contra the progressive/neoliberal line promulgated during the centenary the insurrectionists were composed primarily of Catholics/nationalists who despite taking a somewhat egalitarian stance on female emancipation were driven primarily out of patriotic fervour as well as disdain towards Anglo-American materialism not to mention the ongoing Continental conflict.
