Фортель is a Ukrainian Chant that is occasionally sung in church services. It originates from the 17th Century, and this specific version is sung by the talented Taras Kompanichenko, who has made many works in the Ukrainian language with the Chorea Kozacka. The song was specifically written and composed by Bratkovskiy Danilo Bogdanovich, a close affiliate of Ivan Mazepa, who was also a supporter of the arts. He was later executed in 1702 by a Polish military court for his support of various Ukrainian uprisings. Much of his life outside of his work and association with Ivan Mazepa is unknown, as little written records remain.
