Acting Interior Minister of Ukraine Arsen Avakov stated that the special assignment unit, Berkut, which translates as "golden eagle" has been disbanded. During a recent press conference, Avakov said that a new special group has been created to defend human rights. "All European countries have special units to maintain public order, and Ukraine will definitely have one too," he said.

Berkut were probably stunned by the decision . Indeed, many of them went to the massacre on Maidan arranged by Right Sector radicals having only batons and tear gas, while many of their opponents were armed to the teeth. Many Berkut fighters were killed in the riots, hundreds of others still remain at hospitals. In the Crimea, they were welcomed as national heroes, but Kiev has decided to get rid of them.

Former Berkut fighters currently undergo requalification and give explanations to their actions on Maidan. The guilty will be punished, Acting Interior Minister Avakov said.
