A 51-year-old North Carolina man is accused of punching an 11-year-old girl in the face during a fight Saturday at the Asheville Mall, according to the Asheville Citizen-Times.
An Asheville Police spokesperson said “a fight involving a group of juveniles broke out at the Asheville Mall...after breaking it up David Steven Bell, 51, pushed a young girl and hit her.” What was not said was clearly on film. He was being circled by a teen mob and had a woman and a very small child up against a wall at one point he appeared to be shielding.
Video of the altercation has been viewed thousands of times on YouTube, drawing outrage against the man and some criticism of a group of teens who appeared early on to be taunting him.
An off-duty police officer arrested David Steven Bell outside the mall Saturday, minutes after he is accused of hitting the 11-year-old and pushing two other 13-year-old girls, the Citizen-Times reported Monday.
I am somewhat torn over this one, but in the end I side with the attacked rather than the instigator. My prediction is that this man will be found not guilty and there will be a follow up civil trial in which I believe that the parents of the unsupervised children should be held as accountable as anyone else.
